What same-day haulage means
Same-day haulage is a dedicated vehicle collecting your goods and taking them directly to the delivery address, rather than routing them through a hub with other customers' freight. Because the vehicle carries only your consignment, it suits urgent stock, replacement parts, production materials and goods that should not be handled more than necessary.
Whether a same-day delivery is possible depends on the vehicle available, when the goods are ready, the distance and the delivery site's opening hours. Those factors are checked when you book, and a delivery window is confirmed once a suitable vehicle is arranged.
Choosing a vehicle that fits the load
The vehicle needs to fit the goods, not the other way round. For a small, light item a van may be enough; palletised goods, longer items or heavier loads may need a larger van, a rigid lorry or an articulated vehicle. Matching the vehicle correctly avoids paying for space you do not need, and avoids a vehicle arriving that cannot take the load.
To choose the right vehicle we need the number of items or pallets, their dimensions and weight, and whether anything is unusually long, fragile or awkward to handle.
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Dimensions of each item or pallet | Confirms the goods fit the load space |
| Total weight | Determines the vehicle's payload requirement |
| Loading method | Shows whether a tail-lift or particular access is needed |
| Fragile or non-stackable goods | Affects how the load is secured and how much space it uses |
Information that decides the vehicle
Be ready before you book
Same-day work moves quickly, so readiness matters. Ideally the goods should be packed, labelled and ready to load when the booking is made, with someone at the collection point to hand them over. If the load is still being prepared, give an honest ready time so the collection can be planned around it.
Confirm the delivery contact, opening hours and any booking-in requirements at the destination before the vehicle sets off. A same-day delivery can still fail if the receiving site has closed or cannot accept the goods.
Access at collection and delivery
Tell us how the goods will be loaded and unloaded, and whether there are any restrictions on vehicle size, parking or loading times at either address. City-centre premises, shared yards and sites with booking-in procedures can all affect which vehicle can be used and when it can arrive.
Realistic delivery windows
A same-day delivery window depends on when the vehicle can collect, the journey distance, traffic and driver availability. For longer journeys, or bookings made later in the day, delivery the same day may not be achievable; in that case an early next-day delivery on a dedicated vehicle may be the practical alternative. We will tell you what is realistic before you commit.
When a pallet or scheduled service is the better choice
Not every delivery needs a dedicated vehicle. If the date is flexible, a pallet service or scheduled road freight may meet the need at lower cost. Our guide to pallet delivery from Manchester covers the details to provide for a pallet quote.
