Why pallet prices are quoted rather than listed
If you are sending pallets from a Manchester site, you will notice that most providers ask for details before giving a price. That is because a pallet quote is built from several variables: what the pallet actually measures and weighs once loaded, where it is going, what equipment is available at each end, and how quickly it needs to arrive. Two pallets leaving the same industrial estate on the same day can reasonably be priced differently.
Knowing those variables helps you get a usable quote first time and understand which of your own choices affect the price.
Measured loaded dimensions and weight
Price is based on the pallet as it will travel, not the size of the empty base. Measure length, width and height with the goods loaded and wrapped, including any overhang, and weigh the complete pallet. Estimates are a common cause of problems: if a consignment turns out larger or heavier than booked, it may need to move onto a different service or be re-priced.
Pallet services are usually grouped into size and weight bands. Staying within the band you booked keeps things straightforward; if you are close to a limit, say so at quote stage.
Collection and delivery postcodes
Both full postcodes matter. They decide how the pallet is routed, which services are available and whether any area-specific conditions apply — for example remote or island destinations, or city-centre addresses with restricted access. Give full postcodes rather than a town name so the quote reflects the real addresses.
Access, forklift and tail-lift requirements
Tell us how the pallet will be loaded and unloaded. A standard vehicle may be suitable where the site has a forklift that can load or unload at the vehicle, a loading dock at the right height, or other loading equipment agreed in advance. A hand pallet truck on its own cannot lift a pallet between the ground and the vehicle deck. If neither end has suitable equipment, a tail-lift vehicle will normally be needed, together with firm, level ground and enough space for the tail-lift to operate and the pallet to be moved.
Mention anything that affects the vehicle reaching the door: narrow streets, height or weight limits, gated sites, booking-in systems at distribution centres, or ground-floor delivery only. Access issues found on the day can lead to a failed collection or delivery, which costs time for everyone.
Stackability and the nature of the goods
Whether another pallet can safely be placed on top of yours affects how much vehicle space it uses. Non-stackable, fragile or unusually shaped goods take up more room and may suit a different service. Describe the goods honestly — what they are, how they are packed and whether they can bear weight — so the right service can be chosen.
Readiness and collection windows
A collection is quoted on the basis that the goods will be ready, wrapped and labelled when the vehicle arrives. Let us know the earliest time the pallet will be ready and any times the site is closed or busy. If goods are not ready, the vehicle may not be able to wait, and the collection may need rebooking.
Collection and delivery windows are separate things. A collection is usually arranged within a time window on the agreed day, and delivery timing depends on the service chosen and the destination. Where you need a specific delivery time, ask whether a timed option is available for that address.
Economy and faster options
Many pallet movements can be booked on a standard or economy service, or on a faster service where available. Faster and timed services generally cost more than economy options. Which options are offered depends on the collection and delivery postcodes, the size and weight of the pallet and capacity on the day, so availability is confirmed when the booking is made.
If your delivery date is flexible, it is worth asking for more than one option so you can weigh cost against timing.
When to ask about a dedicated vehicle
A pallet service is not always the best fit. Larger consignments, goods that should not be handled at a hub, high-value items or deliveries that must arrive at a particular time may suit a dedicated vehicle running directly. There is no fixed pallet count at which one becomes better value than the other — it depends on the route, the goods and the timings — so ask for both options when you are unsure. - Weight of each pallet, including the base

- Any access restrictions or booking-in requirements
- When the goods will be ready for collection
- The delivery date you are working to, and whether it is flexible
