Why the choice of provider matters
Moving goods between the UK and Europe involves more parties than a domestic delivery: the carrier, customs agents on each side, the sender and the receiver. When something is unclear — who files a declaration, who pays a charge, what happens if goods are damaged — delays and unexpected costs follow. The right provider makes those responsibilities clear before the goods move.
The questions below are a practical starting point when comparing European haulage companies.
Who coordinates the customs paperwork?
Ask exactly which customs formalities the provider will handle, which they will arrange through a customs agent and which remain your responsibility. Clarify who prepares export and import declarations, who supplies commercial invoices and other documents, and how any duties or import taxes will be paid and by whom.
Your agreed delivery terms with your customer or supplier also affect who is responsible for what. Customs requirements change, so check current GOV.UK guidance on exporting goods and importing goods into the UK (linked below), or take advice from a customs specialist for your specific goods.
What does the quotation include?
European quotes can be structured very differently, so compare them line by line. Ask whether the price covers collection, the crossing, delivery, customs clearance on each side, fuel and any tolls, and which charges may be added later — for example waiting time, failed deliveries or storage if goods are held.
- Collection and delivery, and any tail-lift or access charges
- Channel or sea crossing
- Export and import customs clearance
- Duties and import taxes, and who pays them
- Waiting time, storage or re-delivery charges
- Validity period of the quote
Carrier liability is not the same as cargo insurance
Carriers accept a level of liability for loss or damage under the terms they trade on, but that liability is often limited and may not reflect the full value of your goods. Cargo insurance is separate cover that can protect the value of the consignment.
Ask the provider what liability applies to your movement, what the limits are and under which conditions, and whether you need separate cargo insurance. If the goods are high value, check this before booking rather than after something goes wrong. Our guide to cargo insurance and carrier liability explains the difference in more detail.
Clarity on route, load and timing
A good provider will ask detailed questions about the goods and the delivery before quoting. Expect to be asked for dimensions, weights, packaging, the nature of the goods and any special handling, as well as the delivery address and access.
Ask how the route will be planned, whether the goods will travel on a dedicated vehicle or with other consignments, and what the expected transit time is. Transit times can be affected by border checks, crossings and driver hours, so ask how delays are communicated and who your contact is while the goods are moving.
Questions to ask any European haulage provider
Before booking, it is worth getting clear answers to these:
- Which customs steps do you handle, and which are mine?
- What exactly does the quote include and exclude?
- What liability applies if goods are lost or damaged, and should I insure separately?
- Will my goods travel on a dedicated vehicle or with other freight?
- What transit time should I plan around, and what could delay it?
- Who is my contact during the movement, and how will I be updated?
- What documents do you need from me, and by when?
