How same-day courier pricing is built
Same-day courier pricing is refreshingly simple compared to network freight: you are paying for a dedicated vehicle and driver to travel directly from A to B. The quote is therefore dominated by mileage, with a base charge covering the vehicle and driver's time for the duration of the job.
Unlike overnight networks, there is no consolidation. Your goods are the only freight on board, the vehicle leaves as soon as it is loaded, and it drives directly to the delivery point. You are buying speed, exclusivity and a single point of responsibility, and the price reflects that.
Mileage, vehicle size and waiting time
Most providers quote a per-mile rate that varies by vehicle class. A small van costs less per mile than a 7.5-tonne truck, so matching the vehicle to the load matters. Sending a single pallet in a Luton van when a long-wheelbase panel van would do is a common way to overspend.
Collection and loading time are usually included within reason, but extended waiting, multi-drop additions, out-of-hours work and congestion or clean-air zone charges may appear as separate line items. Ask for these to be identified on the quote so the price you accept is the price on the invoice.
When same-day is worth the premium
Same-day earns its premium when the cost of delay exceeds the cost of the vehicle: a production line stopped for a missing component, a legal document that must be signed today, event materials needed before doors open, or a customer delivery promise that would otherwise be broken. In those situations, the direct, dedicated nature of same-day transport is the entire point.
It is also the right tool when goods are fragile, high-value or security-sensitive, because a dedicated vehicle removes the repeated handling of a hub-and-spoke network. Fewer touches mean fewer opportunities for damage or loss.
When overnight or palletised freight is cheaper
If your consignment can wait until tomorrow, a pallet network or next-day parcel service will almost always cost less, because the carrier spreads vehicle costs across hundreds of consignments. Same-day only makes financial sense when the deadline is genuinely today.
A good rule of thumb: if you would not pay a colleague to drive it there themselves, consider whether economy overnight would meet the need. If it truly cannot wait, same-day is the correct purchase, and trying to save a small amount with a slower service risks a much larger cost of failure.
