Peak season logistics: how to plan Black Friday and Christmas freight without paying premium rates

30 October 2024 5 min read

Q4 demand always outstrips available capacity

Every year, transport capacity tightens from late October through December as retail and e-commerce volumes climb sharply for Black Friday and Christmas. Businesses that leave booking until the last few weeks typically face higher spot rates and reduced choice of carrier.

A simple planning timeline

Getting ahead of peak season doesn't need to be complicated — it just needs to start earlier than most businesses assume.

  • Forecast expected volumes by week as early as August/September
  • Share forecasts with your transport partner so capacity can be provisionally reserved
  • Confirm firm bookings for known peak weeks (commonly around week 40 onwards) rather than waiting for exact order numbers
  • Diversify across more than one carrier route so a single delay doesn't affect your whole peak period

How our network approach helps at peak

Because we draw on multiple carriers rather than a single fleet, we're often able to absorb peak demand spikes more flexibly than a business relying on one dedicated provider. Early engagement with our operations team remains the single biggest factor in avoiding premium spot-market rates during Q4.
