ADR hazardous goods transport: what shippers should ask their haulier

14 November 2024 6 min read

ADR isn't optional — and neither is choosing the right carrier

The ADR agreement governs the international carriage of dangerous goods by road, covering everything from packaging and labelling to driver training and vehicle specification. Moving hazardous goods with a non-compliant carrier isn't just a compliance risk — it's a genuine safety risk.

Questions worth asking before you book

If your goods fall under ADR classification, a few direct questions to your transport provider will tell you whether they're set up to handle the job properly.

  • Is the driver ADR-trained and certified for the relevant classes of goods?
  • Is the vehicle correctly plated and equipped for the packaging group involved?
  • What tunnel restriction code applies to the route, and has it been checked?
  • Is emergency documentation (transport document, instructions in writing) prepared correctly?

How we manage ADR movements

We only place hazardous goods jobs with carriers in our network who hold the relevant ADR accreditation and training for the specific class of goods being moved, and we confirm route and tunnel restrictions before the vehicle is booked, not after.
